University, training and employment beckons for Thanet's sixth formers after the 2010 A level results were announced.

For many there were celebrations, although for some who didn't quite get the grades needed, it meant a rethink of their future. We look at how three of the area's schools and colleges performed.

Hartsdown Technology College at Margate (see pic) has recorded another impressive year of A Level performances with 100 per cent pass rates in a range of subjects. The high standard set in recent years has been maintained once again with 27 students heading for university this year or after a gap year, with others continuing into further education and training.

Head of sixth form Sharon Buchanan said: "I am absolutely delighted with these results - they are just reward for the hard work, dedication and enthusiasm shown by our students and staff during the last years.

"Once again there is a high proportion of students heading for university and further education which is especially pleasing as we have expanded our range of courses, some of which have been examined for the first time this year."

Candidates recorded 100 per cent passes in a range of subjects including English Literature, Business Studies, Health and Social care, ICT and Performing Arts. Science students did exceptionally well with 12 out of 13 students passing.

Many students taking the new international cuisine course gained distinctions and merits.

Thanet College's AS and A level results continue to improve, with students achieving a 90 per cent pass rate at AS level and 91.7 per cent at A2. With 100 per cent of students passing in some subjects, most students have been able to progress onto the university of their choice or into employment.

Principal Graham Razy said: "100 per cent pass rates are testament to the hard work of both students and teachers during the year".

Students have performed extremely well, in particular Rosalind Nelson, a mature student, who achieved an A grade in AS English whilst working full time and Curtis McCarthy who achieved 3 B grades while overcoming challenging personal circumstances.

Many AS students will continue to study with the College to gain their full A2 qualifications in English, Psychology and Sociology from September 2010.

A pass rate of 98 per cent in GCE A levels or equivalent matches the achievement of Marlowe Academy students in 2009 - but the exam grades are up on last year.

More than 60 per cent of leavers from the academy's upper sixth form are expected to get a university place despite cuts in university intakes. Others are likely to find places at colleges, apprenticeships and employment.

This year marked the first time that Marlowe Academy students have taken straight A2 Level GCEs and they have acquitted themselves well, says Marlowe Principal Ian Johnson.

He added: "It is a pleasing range of academic and vocational qualifications from our sixth form students, many of whom have grown up with the academy from year 7 youngsters to young adults."

Among the A level GCE successes are Charleigh (corr) O'Neill who gained a B in sociology, a C in media studies and Ds in law and English. Danielle Moore sat 3 AS level exams and gained Bs in law and sociology and a C in English.
