Drivers were turned around in both directions on the approach to the accident, which has occurred near The Stag pub (formerly the Halfway House) in Challock.

A photo from the scene shows at least two vehicles, a van and and a car, which have been severely damaged.

The car, a black hatchback, had rolled onto its back with damage to the rear of the vehicle.

A witness said drivers stuck in delays had been told that the road would be closed “for quite some time”.

They added that it appeared no one had been seriously injured in the crash.

An ambulance spokesperson said that one person had been taken to the William Harvey Hospital as a precaution for minor injuries.
