A win and a second place finish for Shane Byrne lifted him to second in the British Superbike Championship.

Byrne (pictured) held off a strong challenge from rivals Tommy Hill and Michael Laverty to win race one.

He then finished less than a second behind race two winner Laverty to add more valuable credits ahead of the Superbike Showdown.

Sittingbourne's Byrne now sits six points behind Tommy Hill but the leading six bikers will all be level again when the Showdown begins, at Donington Park on September 9.

Following a successful weekend in Scotland, 35-year-old Byrne said: "We weren’t sure how it would pan out in the second race.

"We had kept the same setting from the first one and thought that we might have been able to go a bit quicker but both Michael and Tommy had a strong pace again and I got into second but the times were coming down and we were within a tenth to Tommy.

"I wanted another win but second is better than crashing out and I am happy that we have come away with some more podium credits for our championship so thanks to the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki team."

Round six of the championship takes place at Oulton Park on July 8.
