Smoke alarm advice after house fire

Fire crews say people living in a house in Ramsgate were lucky to escape a blaze at their home this morning.

Pumps from the Ramsgate and Broadstairs fire stations were sent to the The Retreat, off Newington Road, at 5.20am.

The occupants were able to tackle the kitchen fire themselves using a powder fire extinguisher.

But Kent Fire and Rescue Service said they were fortunate to discover the blaze when they did.

A spokesman said: "This property didn't have any smoke detectors fitted, so it's lucky we didn't have a major incident.

"This is a relevant time to remind people of the importance of fire alarms and of having them tested regularly."

Firefighters fitted two smoke detectors to the house before leaving the scene.
