Speed cameras for death road

SPEED cameras have been switched on at a notorious accident blackspot in the county.

After 57 accidents, seven deaths and nine serious injuries, permanent average speed cameras will regulate traffic at Fenn Corner, on the A228, on the Isle of Grain.

The new cameras will cover a four-and-a-half mile stretch of road.

Rachel Wall, from the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, said the cameras were based on a calculation of a driver's average speed, stopping them from slowing down and speeding up between each one.

"It will take a photograph as drivers enter the site, along the site, and then as they leave, calculating their average speed between those two points," she explained.

Two years ago, Medway Council promised to tackle dangerous sections along the A228.

Keith Hanshaw, head of traffic parking and waste services, said other measures had since been introduced on the road to reduce the speed limit, including no overtaking and vehicle actuated speed display signs.
