Thatched roof house engulfed by flames

A HOME was wrecked when a massive fire swept through a thatched roof.

The blaze, in Grove Road, Penshurst, near Tonbridge, started in a chimney and quickly spread to engulf the whole roof.

Fire engines from across Kent rushed to the fire, which started at around 5.50pm on Friday.

At its fiercest point, 10 fire engines, a water carrier and a water management unit were drafted in to try and fight the inferno.

More than 50 firefighters tried to get the blaze under control.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said the house had suffered extensive water damage.

The final stop came just after at 5.25am, nearly 12 hours after the blaze began.
