Speculation is mounting over the future of Kent’s director of cricket Paul Farbrace.

The 44-year-old former Sri Lankan assistant coach still has one year left on his three-year contract at the St Lawrence Ground and pressed on whether Farbrace’s position was under discussion, chief executive Jamie Clifford said: "I am not in a position to comment and have nothing to say on the matter."

Farbrace, who was appointed at the end of the 2009 season, this week pulled out of a planned question and answer session on KentOnline for tonight (Thursday) and has since been unavailable for comment.

If Farbrace (pictured) does take the ultimate responsibility for the club’s worst Championship finish for 16 years – following Division 1 relegation last season – it will represent a major U-turn by the club, just a month after chairman George Kennedy said he "is the best man to lead the county to success."

Speaking in August, Mr Kennedy said: "There are no talks whatever of any shape or form with Farby, who is under contract.

"He is the director of cricket at Kent County Cricket Club and as far as I’m concerned, he will remain director of cricket.

"It’s hard to blame him when we haven’t actually got all the results we want and I think changing coach at this time would be a big mistake."

Farbrace was appointed following the departure of Graham Ford and was linked with a return to Sri Lanka earlier this summer, following the resignation of head coach Trevor Bayliss

Writing his blog on the county’s website last week, he said: "There will be a lot of reflection time for us all over the next month or so.

"I plan to have a couple of weeks around the club, getting things organised before a brief holiday.

"I will hopefully continue to blog during the winter, if circumstances allow."
