Video: Plant food drug mephedrone became illegal today - one Kent user speaks

by Jonathan Stone

A Kent student has told how taking party drug mephedrone was "the worst experience" of his life - on the day it’s banned in the UK.

The 22-year-old – who didn't want to reveal his name – said he initially felt a rush of elation after taking mephedrone.

But then he suffered a severe headache lasting several days.

Speaking to KentOnline, the user said: "Every time you come down off the trip, you have ridiculous headaches.

"I thought it was something to do with the amount of alcohol I was throwing down my neck, and it wasn’t until I stopped it I realised it was messing my brain up."

The student added how he’s glad the drug - sold on the internet as "plant food" and linked with several UK deaths - is now illegal.

"I think all synthesised drugs should be taken off the market anyway," he said.

Mephedrone has been classified as a Class B illegal substance and possession can carry a five-year prison sentence.

From today, dealing the drug will carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison.

But as the UK woke up to a new crime, websites selling the drug are cleaning up their act.

Clicking on a site that offers to sell "the legal high" shows all details have been wiped off. Another site declared that it had now closed.
