Walkway forced to close after £200k steel thieves strike

It took more than 100 years to reopen Rochester Riverside waterfront to the people of the Medway Towns - and less than five weeks for criminals to close it.

The mile-long walkway was opened in a blaze of publicity last month. But now thieves have put paid to that by taking more than 200 stainless steel fence posts worth up to £200,000.

The fencing was protecting walkers from the river.
