Jazz enthusiasts are celebrating a secure future for the Wantsum Jazz Festival for the next three years thanks to sponsorship from Thanet Council. The event takes place from August 22 to 24 in Ramsgate where the music has a firm following. Organisers say the festival is a great bonus to the district’s economy.

Last year it attracted an audience of about 5,000 people from as far afield as Brighton and Birmingham.

“We believe that such events will continue to improve the perception of Ramsgate and more generally Thanet, and therefore contribute indirectly to the commercial success of the area,” said treasurer Tony Bex.

“Now we have this essential funding thanks to Thanet Council, we are ready to speak to other sponsors.”

Headliners last year included the world famous John Altman Quartet, notable for the theme to the film Titanic, and legendary UK jazz/soul singer Omar.

This year’s line up is not yet confirmed but the festival already has an exciting shortlist.

Artistic director Duncan Mackay said: “The amount of support we have out there among the superstars of the music industry is incredible.”

Acts on the cards include Roy Ayers and Georgie Fame, the Larry Love Showcase Band (of Alabama 3 and Sopranos fame), Bassistry, Electric Arkestra and Harbour Jazz Orchestra.

The festival aims to feature international names alongside local talent.
