bring younsters' views on farming into the 21st century

A top Kent farming college says more people are needed in the
industry to meet food supply demands in future years.

Rural land accounts for 85 per cent of the county and bosses at
Hadlow College near Tunbridge Wells insist we have to start
making the most of it.

They are worried people have a dated view of what farming
involves and that young people in particular are not interested
because they do not know anything about the industry.

Hadlow College finance director Mark Lumsdon-Taylor says: "Some
people think it's just straight forward arable and dairy
production, making no reference to environmental management and
conservation, future-proofing it for generations."

Hadlow College farm manager David Hammond said: "We did have bad
press, we did struggle when prices were low but we're on the upturn
now."

"There are ways to getting into farming and we are moving in the
right direction at last."
