A major conservation project is underway at one of Medway's most historic buildings.

Upnor Castle, built in 1559, and now a popular setting for civil weddings and tourist events, is having £250,000 spent on it.

Medway Council is working with English Heritage to preserve it for future generations.

Roofs, gutters, Elizabethan brickwork, and the windows have already been repaired.

Now a specialist contractor, Universal Stone, is repairing the river walls.

Karen Richardson, English Heritage's Estates Surveyor for the south-east, said: "Upnor Castle made an enormous contribution to British history, protecting our naval forces against invasion.

"After nearly 450 years it is time for us to repay that debt and we are delighted to be able to fund these essential repairs."

Cllr Howard Doe, whose portfolio includes Upnor Castle, said: "Our heritage needs to be protected."
