A Swiss pilot has become the first person ever to cross the Channel with only a single jet-propelled wing strapped to his back.

On Friday, Yves Rossy jumped from an aircraft more than 3,000 metres above ground over Cap Blanc Nez, fired up the jets on his wing and soared across the Channel at speeds approaching 190kph.

The crossing took 10 minutes. He landed safely in Dover just before 1.20pm.

It was third time lucky for the so-called 'Jet Man'. On Thursday, bad weather grounded M Rossy's world record-breaking attempt for the second time.

He said: "I have only got one life, so it's too risky to make the crossing."

M Rossy is due to return to work and fly a commercial plane-load of passengers to Egypt on Monday.

The flight was broadcast live on the National Geographic Channel and the internet.
