Leon Camier recorded two career best finishes during World Superbike round two in Portugal but insists his maiden season could be in danger of flat lining.

For the second meeting running Camier (pictured) was below-par during qualifying finishing 11th on the gird in Portimao a month after ending the same stage in 16th during the opening round in Australia.

Despite that the Alitalia Aprilia rider showed impressive race pace to finish a lifetime best of fifth in both race one and two on the 2.76-mile circuit.

However Camier – who lifted the British Superbike title last season – admitted his performances will stay that way for the foreseeable future unless he improves during qualifying.

“It was pretty hard work – I had to come from 11th on the grid and that meant passing a lot of fast riders,” said Camier.

“It is a little frustrating as in both races I had good pace towards the end – I was getting faster and faster and could see I was reeling in the guys up front.

“Going forward now I know I need to improve during qualifying and my race starts in order to be right up there with the top guys.

“I am really looking forward to the next round – the plan will be to piece it all together and if we can do that we should be really strong.”

Camier was upstaged by Alitalia Aprilia teammate Max Biaggi in Portugal with the Italian veteran storming to two race wins while championship leader Leon Haslam finished second twice.

The Wimbourne-based rider sits 53 points away from fellow Brit Haslam with 32 in eighth but Camier insists he won’t be looking at the championship table just yet.

He said: “Some tracks will be good and some will be bad and I have to realise that the championship could be out of reach – I want to improve as a rider and continue to learn.”

All World Superbike Championship races will be broadcast on British Eurosport, with the European rounds also available in High Definition. British Eurosport Sky 410 & Virgin Media 521, Eurosport HD Sky 412.
