Gills boss Martin Allen questions his players' passion after League 1 defeat against Bradford

There’s no more Mr Nice Guy, insists Gills manager Martin Allen.

Allen watched his Gillingham team slip to the bottom of League 1 on Saturday, which led to him questioning some of his players’ attitudes.

He said: “There needs to be changes and I am capable of that.

“You need strong leadership, strong guidance and we have to make it better. I have a responsibility to the supporters and to the players and, more than anything, to myself.

“I want action, passion and people marking in the right places on corners and free-kicks.

“You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know something has to change. I put some players on the transfer list and I have not had one enquiry.

“That was to see if I could maybe raise some money to bring one or two players in who would help our team but that hasn’t happened.

Last season the Gills won League 2 but they still haven’t won a game so far at the start of the current campaign.

Allen said: “We have just had a 10-month competition where everyone to a man has been united, whether you were playing or not. You did your best and if you were given the shirt, you delivered.

“Of course, there were times last year when it wasn’t great, there were times in games where we didn’t play that well but got a result.

"We need to revisit those values and get back to what it was that got us into this division.

“I can take losing but I want spirit, tenacity and willingness, drive and hunger and a passion.

“There are too many games where I have defended them, looked after them and supported them but I need to take some action.

“I have been friendly and a good manager, been supportive, kind and helpful but those values need to be put in place. Changes need to be made.”
