SIDCUP golfer Bob Cameron is celebrating his first European Seniors Tour title after winning the Open de France Seniors at the Omaha Beach Club in Normandy.

The 51-year-old shot a five under par 67 final round for a three-stroke win from compatriot David J Russell.

To cap a memorable day, his success in the third event of the tour, which runs until the end of November, also earned him a cheque for €30,000 (£20,246).

Cameron, in his second year on the circuit, finished with a three-round aggregate of six under par.

He said: “It was a goal of mine to win an event this year. I was pretty calm on the last day, which was good, and I had three birdies in a row on the back nine.”

The former Sundridge Park Golf Club professional’s three birdies in succession from the 12th hole were part of a bogey-free final round, the joint best of the week.

There was double delight in the Cameron household after his 21-year-old son James clinched the Stoke Park Trophy over same weekend as his dad’s success in France.

James played four rounds over two days at Stoke Park Golf Club, Buckinghamshire, where he beat England international Martin Sell in a sudden death play-off.
