Chance to challenge Royden in half-marathon

ORGANISERS for the 21st Hempstead Valley Half Marathon at Gillingham are hoping to find someone who can give race favourite Barry Royden a run for his money.

Many runners have already signed up to ensure the race is as competitive as ever and more are expected to take the opportunity to tackle the gruelling 13-mile course.

The event, on Sunday, May 5, is being sponsored by Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre and supported by Medway Today and Medway Messenger newspapers. The half marathon starts at 9am and a fun run will begin at 9.10am.

Race administrator Tony Hedges said: "We are hoping someone signs up who can really challenge Barry and give him a surprise in the nicest possible way. We also want others to turn up and take part for a variety of reasons.

"The course is renown as being quite a challenge so there's quite a sense of achievement for runners who stay the distance. Plus this is a great chance to raise money for good causes through sponsorship, improve your fitness and have fun."

Although the numbers are slightly down on last year Mr Hedges said this was to be expected because the entry forms were sent out a little later than usual.

He said: "We anticipate a mad rush in the next few days and people can sign up for the race until 10 minutes before the big off so there's plenty of time to put your name down."
