Seven national titles and medals galore for Kent athletes at English Schools Championships in Birmingham

Kent athletes competed with distinction in the English Schools Championships at Birmingham on Friday and Saturday, returning with 15 medals including seven national titles and two championship records, writes Alan Newman

In the junior boys’ events James Whiteaker (Tonbridge AC) won javelin gold (56.67m) and there were silvers for Camron Lyttle (Bexley) in the 100m (11.15sec) and Ethan Akanni (Bexley) in the 80m hurdles (11.52).

George Duggan (Tonbridge) is the new intermediate boys’ 1,500m champion (4min04.84sec) and there was bronzes for Tommy Ramdhan (Bexley) in the 100m (10.96), Joseph O’Hara (Bexley) in the 800m (1.53.82) and Richard Webb (Blackheath and Bromley) in the 1,500m steeplechase (4.23.05).

Senior boys’ medals were hard to achieve but Matthew Blandford (Tonbridge) managed bronze in the discus (48.64).

There were two champions in the junior girls’ events. Isio Orogun (Dartford Harriers) won the 200m (25.37) and Sabrina Sinha (Cambridge Harriers) took the 1,500m (4.24.62).

Two titles and two new championship best performances were the highlights from the intermediate girls’ events. Cheriece Hylton (Blackheath and Bromley) dominated the 300m (37.93) and Ellie Gooding (Ashford) soared over 3.90m in the pole vault. For good measure, the Kent team were third in the 4x100m relay (48.41).

Dina Asher-Smith (Blackheath and Bromley) scorched to victory in the senior girls’ 200m (23.63) and Gemma Brown (Blackheath and Bromley) added silver in the discus (41.21) to complete a hugely successful championships.
