SITTINGBOURNE Spray-Tex Crusaders return to home action on Sunday aiming to build on their first win of the season.

Facing the double-pronged attack of the Boston Barracudas and the Rye House Raiders back-to-back Conference League matches should hold few fears for the Iwade-based speedway club having seen off championship contenders Oxford in their last outing.

There were seven Crusaders heroes when finally a last-heat decider went the home side's way - turning around a five points deficit with two races remaining to win 45-44.

Remarkably, this was the fourth time a League match at the Old Gun Site had gone to a winner-takes-all decider this term.

Double-figures returns from number one Danny Warwick and newcomer Jerran Hart riding at number seven were the stand-out scores, but an all round team effort was always going to be needed to inflict the only defeat of the season so far on the university city club.

Aaron Baseby recorded perhaps the best win of his short career in the vital penultimate race and both skipper Dean Felton and Jon Stevens weighed in with vital paid wins too.

The visitors this coming Sunday represent further challenges for the improving Crusaders, seeing the return of two Iwade-discoveries in Garry Cottham and Barry Burchatt.

The Lincolnshire side also boast a number of top stars including the reigning Conference Pairs champs, Paul Cooper and Simon Lambert.

The meeting starts at noon on Sunday and includes two 15-heat matches.

Result: Sittingbourne 45 Oxford Cheetahs 44

Scorers: Warwick 14; Hart 10; Felton 9; Baseby 7; Harland Cook 3; Stevens 2; James Theobald 0.
