PAUL GASCOIGNE could be on his way to Priestfield after the Division 1 outfit expressed an interest in signing the ex-England star on a short-term basis.

Gillingham have been searching for a creative influence in the middle of the field for a number of weeks but, despite attempts to sign West Ham's John Moncur on loan, the club have been unsuccessful.

Player-boss Andy Hessenthaler said: “We are looking for a player like Paul Gascoigne and our chairman has spoken to the player’s representative.

“Paul is keeping himself fit and we need a bit of extra quality in midfield. We are looking to create more in that part of the field which is why we enquired about John Moncur at West Ham.”

Gascoigne, who has been out of action since the end of last season when he played six games on loan for Burnley, is now a free agent.
