Gillingham 1 Wycombe Wanderers 1: Reaction from Gills boss Neil Harris and match highlights

Gillingham boss Neil Harris praised his side for making his second half reshuffle against Wycombe work.

The Gills were a different team second half, playing with a change in formation after Harris switched a defender for an attacker. They fought back from a goal down to level trough a Jack Tucker volley and finish the match as the team most likely to win the game.

Harris, speaking after the draw, was delighted with the way his side ended the game against a side starting the day in the top six.

He said: “We should have won the game, first half it was disappointing, we weren’t good enough with the football and I am not talking about being free-flowing with the football and chance after chance, I don’t expect that with my group at the moment, but the decision making on the ball, we have to be better, swinging feet at it rather than getting the ball down and making a pass.

“I made a change tactically at half-time and no slight on Conor Masterson coming off at all [he was replaced by Ben Reeves]. I had to choose one of the three centre halves and I could have picked any of them. The three of them weren’t good enough in the first half. I picked Conor because I just felt physically and maybe aerially we had to stand up to them a bit. I wanted to change shape and play the diamond second half and try and get after the ball more and we were so much better.

“We got another attacking player on the pitch and it was important to try and get Reeves higher up and use his quality.

“We got back on level terms and then we could have gone on and had more, was one over the line? I am not sure, the referee or linesman only gives what he sees. In that instance did it surprise anyone in the stadium that we did not get a decision from the referee or linesman? I don’t think we got a decision all game.

“I am disappointed we didn’t win the game, but I am delighted with the group for the spirit and determination and the way we played second half.”

Gillingham have played with wing-backs since Harris took over but switched to a 4-4-2 diamond formation in an effort to change the momentum on Saturday. It worked.

He said: “The switch in formation definitely helped and we have to remember who we were up against. This isn’t small Wycombe any more, this is a team that has been in the Championship, a team that has got Ryan Tafazolli, Sam Vokes, Josh Scowen, David Stockdale, quality Championship players, not just good League 1 players, they pay them money and we are competing against a team with a miles bigger budget than ourselves, not the same as Ipswich, Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday, but it doesn’t mean they are not a big club at this level, they are.

“I saw them at Cambridge (on Tuesday night) and they could have scored seven or eight [they won 4-1], they were better than Oxford were against Gillingham [Oxford beat the Gills 7-2] before I took over, they could have scored more goals in that game, I knew they were a good side.

“First half they were better than us and they showed that quality and played to their strengths, ran past us at times, physically they were better than us at times and scored a really good goal. I changed the shape because I felt it would give us a better chance to get higher up the pitch and get after the ball.

“I took a centre half out and put an attacking player in on top of the diamond and I felt it might just give us a foothold and it did, the change of shape helped but credit to the players for making it work.”

Harris didn't want to talk too much about the referee but clearly wasn't impressed. The home fans certainly made their feelings clear.

He said: "Every 50-50 call went against us, which is quite unheard of as a home team, but the referee, first season in League 1, who knows, might be his last." Harris added: "MI think there were eight fouls given against Vadaine Oliver and not one given to him."
