Gillingham 1 Wycombe Wanderers 1: Sam Vokes opened the scoring at Priestfield but Jack Tucker levelled it up in the League 1 clash

Gillingham came from behind to pick up a point against promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Sam Vokes put the play-off chasers ahead in the opening half but Gillingham battled back in the second with a superb strike from Jack Tucker levelling the scores.

Gillingham were able to recall their captain Stuart O’Keefe while Robbie McKenzie was also back in the squad after an injury.

McKenie was needed early on as David Tutonda was unable to continue following an early bang to the knee.

The visitors needed to make an early change themselves following an injury to forward Anis Mehmeti and his replacement Brandon Hanlan - who spent two years with Gillingham - played his part in the opening goal.

Hanlan was jeered by the home crowd throughout but his delicate pass inside to Vokes created the opener, with the Wycombe strike firing home beyond Gills keeper Aaron Chapman.

There was frustration from the home fans with the officials as striker Vadaine Oliver had been pulled down prior to that goal, but Wycombe still had a lot to do, and played some neat passes to create it.

Gillingham were unable to test visiting keeper David Stockdale in the opening half and a couple of efforts went wide of the mark, including a header from Oliver off an inviting McKenzie ball in.

Hanlan headed over the bar for the visitors who went into the break with a goal cushion and in command.

There was a change for the Gills at the break as they looked to create more going forward. Ben Reeves replaced defender Conor Masterson as the home side went to 4-4-2.

Gillingham had put the effort in but hadn’t done enough to trouble the visitors enough. Ryan Jackson fired over early in the second half

There was more frustration towards referee Simon Mather from the home fans as decisions went against both Oliver and the hard-working Kelman. They were further angered as appeals for handball in the box from Ben Thompson’s cross were waved away.

Gillingham were managing to see a lot more of the ball in attacking areas and Jack Tucker prodded an effort at goal which keeper Stockdale had to get behind.

It was Tucker that got the Gills back in the match, scoring with a well-taken finish after Ben Reeves’ free-kick into the box had been cleared into the path of the defender.

Neil Harris’ men had deservedly got back on level terms after a much improved display from the restart. They had chance to win it as well. Reeves had a shot blocked and Kelman had one saved by Stockdale.

Wycombe were under mounting pressure and they had to play the final few minutes with 10 men as Lewis Wing was shown a straight red card for a coming together with Olly Lee.

Oliver thought he had the ball over the line in the final minute after Thompson’s shot was dropped but the officials weren’t convinced.

Gillingham kept pressing in the five minutes of added-on time but had to settle for a point.
