Golf club's double success

MEMBERS of the Upchurch River Valley Golf Club near Gillingham are basking in glory after winning the Whitbread Challenge Shield at Princes GC to add to the Whitbread League title they took earlier this year.

After becoming the first club to complete the unique double 12 months ago, captain Terry Sewell was hoping to repeat the achievement this season, although he realised it wouldn't be easy.

However, the team clinched the first half of the feat in stunning fashion as they remained undefeated through the league programme, picking up 22.5 points out of a possible 30.

In difficult wet and windy conditions at Prince's, and with the team needing a round of 31 points or better from the last game to win the title, Sid Samuels carded 36 points to begin the celebrations.

Although the club used a pool of almost 20 players through the summer, the winning team at Prince's were; Alan Livermore, Richard Miller, Allan Tucker, Ian Smith, Frank Akehurst, Peter Judd, Dave Pettet, Barry Martin, Darren Martin and Samuels.
