KENT snooker star Gerard Greene caused the first major shock of the European Open when he dumped Jimmy White out of the competition yesterday.
The 5-3 win was the latest in a string of excellent results for the Rainham player who takes on world no 4 John Higgins in the last 16 this afternoon.
White took a 2-1 lead before Greene hit back to go 4-3 up thanks to fine 55 and 71 breaks.
He booked his place in the next round after White conceded after going in-off at a vital stage in the eighth frame.
Greene’s odds of winning the competition have been cut from 150-1 to 100-1 and the provisionally ranked world no 46 was understandably delighted with the result.
He said: “Jimmy was my hero when I was young so to beat him is a great result. Perhaps if I get a good run here there’s a chance I might break into the top 32 for next season.”
