Hole-in-one three times in same contest

THREE golfers achieved a hole-in-one on the same day at Walmer & Kingsdown Golf Club. The extraordinary hat-trick occurred in a Stableford competition organised by club professional Matt Paget.

The three who scored an ace were Mick Tedder, Chris Windebank and Ernie Ward. Ten handicap Tedder, of Buckland Avenue, Dover, holed with a seven iron at the 135-yard par three fourth. It was the third ace of his career. He said: “I reckon three holes in one on the same day must be worth a place in the Guinness Book of Records."

Ward, an 18-handicapper from Sydney Road, Deal, performed his feat on the 200-yard par three 11th and Windebank at the 162-yard par three 17th.

Windebank, who lives at Castle Drive, Whitfield, said: “I have been playing golf for 20 years and it’s my first hole in one. I couldn’t believe it when I was told that there had been two others as well.”

Brian Dixon, secretary of the Hole in One Society which records aces scored all over the country, said: “I have heard of two holes in one being scored in a club competition on the same day lots of times, but this is the first time I have ever heard of three.”

*Walmer & Kingsdown lost their opening fixture in the East Kent League 3-2 at Lydd. Having won the first two matches things looked promising, but Lydd took the last three matches to claim victory.

Results (W&K names): Keith Allen & Matt Allen won 1 up; Tony Coleman and Jim Law won 1 up; Karl Massey & Matt Nolan lost 4 & 3; John Barrow & Mick Jowett lost 2 down; Paul Cannons & Noel Campbell lost 4 & 3.

The Newsome Smith Cup, an 18-hole stableford competition at Walmer & Kingsdown, was won by Alfie White with 41 points. Graham Dear came second with 39 points, just edging out Glyn Stone on countback.

* Deal professional Karen Stupples continued her encouraging start to the season on the US Women’s golf tour on Sunday.

Stupples picked up a cheque for $22,080 (£14,150) after finishing tied for 15th place in the Kraft Nabisco Championship in California.
