Home defeat for lowly Sheppey

Sheppey lost at home to promotion hopefuls Old Gravesendians on Saturday and remain six points from safety.

The Old Boys won the Kent 1 game 34-3 but head coach Frank Davis felt his side deserved more from the game, although he did admit there were still faults that need rectifying.

“The scoreline flattered them,” said Davis. “With five minutes to go in the first half it was 5-3. We had lots of possession and territory and were playing some good rugby but then a loose kick puts us under pressure and their centre picks the ball up and scores a try to put them 10-3 ahead.

“The boys were still buoyant as there was everything to play for still. We had the slope and we should have capitalised but they scored two soft tries. It’s a shame as we weren’t able to show how far we’ve come.

“We made some poor decisions in the game and players need to look at each other and put their hands up and make the right decisions - I can’t be there coaching on and off the pitch.”

The club’s 17-year-old second row Jim Baker has been selected for the Kent under-20 squad.

“It’s his first real season and he’s getting his reward for the hard work he’s shown,” said Davis.

Sheppey travel to Gillingham Anchorians this Saturday.
