Injury headaches for Hessenthaler

GILLINGHAM face the prospect of going into Saturday’s first league clash against Wimbledon without a recognised attack as injury problems continue to plague their pre-season preparation.

Tommy Johnson was withdrawn from last night’s final friendly at Burgess Hill after suffering a recurrence of a thigh injury while fellow striker Rod Wallace is still by no means certain to face the Dons after missing last night and Saturday's friendly at Gravesend with a groin strain.

The club’s two major summer signings have still not played together and such was player-manager Andy Hessenthaler's concern with the strong-arm treatment Guy Ipoua received from the Burgess Hill defence that he withdrew him after 18 minutes.

Paul Shaw, who did not play last night, now looks certain to partner Ipoua up front at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Centre-back Barry Ashby is also doubtful for Saturday with a groin strain,

Kevin James, who scored his second pre-season goal in last night's 1-1 draw, could come into Saturday's reckoning.
