Alan Julian makes his debut for Gillingham as manager Mark Stimson makes two changes to the team for the visit of Colchester.

Julian replaces regular stopper Simon Royce while reserve keeper Chris Kiely makes the bench for the first round Carling Cup tie.

Returning to the Gillingham line-up is Nicky Southall, after the midfielder missed Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth, as he was attending a family funeral.

The Gills are without loan midfielder Curtis Weston after his club Leeds didn’t want the player cup-tied.

Teams are permitted to name seven substitutes in this season’s Carling Cup and coming back from illness to take his place on the bench is forward Dennis Oli.

Gills: Julian, Fuller, Nutter, King, Richards, Crofts, Bentley, Southall, Miller, McCammon, Jackson. Subs: Kiely, Mulligan, Lewis, Clohessy, Oli, Mills, Berry.

Colchester: Gerkan, White, Reid, Hammond, Platt, Izzet, Yeates, Heath, Ifil, Vernon, Wordsworth. Subs: Lockwood, Jackson, Coyne, Wasiu, Cousins, Batchelor, Elito.
