Kent skipper Rob Key worked hard to catch the eye of the Test selectors with a stoic innings for England Lions on the opening day of their four-day friendly with New Zealand at the Rose Bowl.

The right-hander batted just over two hours for a dogged 24 before falling leg before soon after lunch to Kiwi seamer Chris Martin.

Key hit only two boundaries in his 86-ball stay as all the Lions batters found the going tough.

Fellow Test hopefuls Ravi Bopara, Owais Shah and Matt Prior all failed on a bouncy pitch at Hedge End, while ex-Kent left-hander Michael Carberry batted 137-balls for 41.
