Ranks bolstered with double signing

CURBISHLEY: Has moved quickly to improve Charlton's goalkeeping options

CHARLTON have snapped up former Everton and Sunderland player Thomas Myhre to help ease their goalkeeping crisis.

The Addicks have also signed teenage Portuguese defender Goncalo Brandao. The players bring the club's tally of summer signings to nine.

Myhre, 31, has been playing for Fredrikstad in his native Norway on a game-by-game basis since leaving Premiership new boys Sunderland at the end of last season.

Since first choice Dean Kiely broke a finger in training last week, the Addicks have been left with one experienced goalkeeper in Denmark international Stephan Andersen and only the inexperienced Darren Randolph as cover.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley confirmed after the friendly defeat against AEK Athens that the club was after another keeper, and the club moved quickly to finalise the deal on Monday.

Speaking after the match, Curbishley said: "I’m looking to sign an experienced goalkeeper before the end of the week because if something were to happen to Stephan we would be left with a big problem."

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Brandao has joined on a season-long loan from Portuguese First Division outfit Belenenses.

The Addicks have an option to sign the player, who has impressed during pre-season for a CAFC XI side, on a permanent deal.

Curbishley has admitted he is still no nearer knowing what his side and formation will be for Saturday's Premiership curtain-raiser at Sunderland.

He said: "We’ve too many injury problems for my liking at this stage of the season but perhaps by Wednesday I’ll have a clearer idea."

Russia international midfielder Alexei Smertin was outstanding in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by the impressive UEFA Cup qualifiers.

He created the equaliser for Dennis Rommedahl but went off at half-time with a knee injury.

The loss marked the end of Charlton's unbeaten pre-season run.
