Peter Taylor has been appointed as permanent successor to Martin Allen at Gillingham.

Taylor has held the management position on an interim basis since Allen's departure last month.

During the interim period, Taylor led the Gills to wins over Carlisle and Notts County.

In his other two league games in charge Gillingham were beaten by Preston and Port Vale.

His most recent game in charge saw the Gills narrowly scrape a draw against non-league Brackley Town.

The players were told of the news by chairman Paul Scally after training. Taylor has agreed to see out the remainder of the season.

Mr Scally said: “The players and I are delighted that Peter has agreed to stay on at the club and we wish him every success in his on-going efforts to push the team up the table.”

Taylor has long been the favourite to succeed Allen but Mr Scally still conducted interviews last week to assess possible rival candidates.

We polled Gillingham fans after Saturday's game, asking whether Taylor was the right man for the job. 46% said he wasn't, 39% said he was and 15% were still unsure.

He will now have the task of trying to keep the Gills in League 1.
