Youngsters in battle for Addicks left-back berth

Kelly Youga faces a fight for a return to the Charlton side

Preston v Charlton

Kelly Youga's return after suspension to Charlton's side at Preston on Saturday is by no means a formality, manager Alan Pardew has insisted.

The left-back, sent off for a so-called professional foul in the Addicks' 1-0 defeat at Watford two weeks ago, was replaced by Kent youngster Grant Basey who played well in Saturday's thrilling 4-2 defeat of Reading.

"It's a tough call because I thought Grant Basey did well on Saturday," said Pardew. "They are two outstanding youngsters who are rivals for the same position."

Midfielder Lloyd Sam is Charlton's only doubt after coming off with a knee injury against Reading. Darren Ambrose, his replacement, could start at Deepdale.

Charlton produced one of their best away performances in winning 2-0 at Deepdale in November.

But Pardew, who watched Preston’s 1-0 midweek home defeat by Derby in the Carling Cup, is expecting a sterner test for his side.

He said: "They've seven points, we've got six and both clubs have made reasonable starts.

"They do carry some good players, who underperformed at times last season, but who got themselves going towards the end.

"I think McKenna is a terrific player while Mellor is looking as good as I've seen him - and I had him at West Ham."
