Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi had an eventful impact as China restored some footballing pride against Australia on Sunday.
Already eliminated from the World Cup picture after a disappointing qualifying campaign, China secured a 1-0 win in Sydney.
They were one up when Zheng arrived from the bench in the second half and although he converted a 77th minute penalty, the spot-kick was ordered to be retaken because of encroachment and he put his second effort wide of the post.
One goal was enough, however, and spelled defeat in a home World Cup qualifier for Australia for the first time in 27 years.
