Video shows moment biker drives wrong way down M20 near Maidstone

A reckless biker has been caught on camera driving the wrong way down the M20 in Maidstone.

They were captured speeding down the hard shoulder of the coastbound carriageway, while heading towards London, between Junction 8 and 7 on Saturday.

The biker was seen travelling the wrong way on the M20

Driver Chris Wilkins, who runs a photobooth business, was on his way to an event at about 2.30pm when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.

The 40-year-old from Finberry in Ashford said: "The guy must have had a death wish.

"He would be very lucky to have even got home to his family driving up the wrong side of the motorway like that, and at that speed.

"I was doing 70mph so he must have been doing at least 55pmh or 60mph.

"I was so shocked I got my passenger to record it.

"By the time we got to the next junction they had pulled off.

"I'm surprised there wasn't an accident."

Highways officers stopped and spoke to the moped rider and police patrols were not required to attend.

In October a similar incident occurred where a BMW driver travelled on the wrong side of the M25 against oncoming traffic for 16 miles before being stopped by police.

The car was caught on camera by astonished onlookers on the motorway, near Dartford.

Police later arrested a man in his 50s from Croydon on suspicion of dangerous driving but he was later released while inquiries continued.

Earlier this year a police officer was seriously injured in a crash with a stolen motorbike which was travelling in the wrong direction on the M25.

It happened on the clockwise carriageway near Junction 3 for Swanley.

The officer was flown to a London hospital after he suffered serious injuries and a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of offences including dangerous driving.

In July, police revealed they were hunting for the driver of a black VW Golf reportedly seen travelling the wrong way on two motorways.

It is alleged the car was driven the wrong way up the slip road at Junction 2A of the M26 for Wrotham, before they continued along the motorway against the flow of traffic onto the M20.

Kent Police has been approached for comment.
