Mercedes driver wanted by police after crash near Junction 3 of the M20 London-bound on Easter Sunday

A driver fled a motorway crash on foot following a shunt which closed part of a carriageway for nearly a day.

A black Mercedes C250 Class, believed to be stolen, collided with the back of a trailer being pulled by a grey Toyota Hilux at 5.20am on Sunday (March 31).

It happened on the M20 London-bound carriageway just before Junction 3 near Wrotham.

The incident, which caused a tractor on the trailer to fall onto the motorway, resulted in the entire carriageway closing until around 7.40am when two of the four lanes were reopened.

But all four lanes weren’t fully reopened until 2.40am on Monday (April 1).

One lane was also shut on the coastbound carriageway to allow police and paramedics to work safely at the scene.

The closures had to remain in place while emergency resurfacing work was carried out to fix damage caused by an oil spillage and debris.

Officers are now trying to find the Mercedes driver, who left the scene on foot and headed towards London.

The vehicle had a partial registration number of PY61.

Any witnesses or motorists with relevant dashcam footage, before or after the collision, should contact the appeal line.

Police would also like to speak to the driver of a blue or dark-coloured mid-sized car with a roof box who stopped at the scene and may have spoken to the Mercedes driver.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 01622 604100, quoting 31-0161.
