Death of Chatham rough sleeper Samson Paine prompts meeting at 10:50 from Victoria micropub in Strood

An informal meeting to discuss homelessness following the death of a rough sleeper in Chatham, is being held tomorrow.

Inquiries are still taking place into the death of the man, named locally as Samson Paine, whose body was discovered in a tent on Wednesday.

The tent had been pitched on a grass patch between the Army careers office and Fort Amherst, opposite Chatham bus station.

It is thought Mr Paine had recently been discharged from hospital after an overdose. It is not known how he died but police are not treating his death as suspicious.

The coroner has been informed and his death is being investigated. Police have not officially released his identity.

This week’s meeting, organised by Guy Jordan, will be held at at 7.30pm tomorrow at the 10:50 from Victoria micropub in North Street, Strood.

Anyone with an interest in housing issues faced by homeless people across the Medway Towns will be welcome.

Marty Brogan, from Caring Hands in the Community said he had been working with Mr Paine and had visited him in hospital.

Mr Brogan also said an increasing number of rough sleepers have been taking shelter in tents.

“Some have ended up homeless and living in trees and in tents up at the Great Lines Heritage Park,” he added.
