Gas leak causes delays to motorists in Frindsbury Road, Strood

A gas escape caused delays on a busy road while emergency repairs are carried out.

Temporary traffic lights went up on Frindsbury Road, Strood, early this morning and also on Whitehall Road on the Medway City Estate.

Work at Whitehall Road was completed by 12.30pm and the road fully reopened, but SGN engineers remain on site at Frindsbury Road.

Medway Council apologised, saying it was aware that motorists were already facing delays due to ongoing works on Frindsbury Hill, but said the temporary lights had been necessary for safety reasons.

Currently a 250-metre section of the A228 is closed from The Sans Pareil roundabout to Brickfield View, while work is carried out to complete the new Maritime Academy School.

The closure will stay in place until June 21.
