The Ship and Trades in St Mary's Island to close 'until further notice' after fire damage

A pub and hotel damaged by fire will close 'until further notice'.

Fire crews were called to the Ship and Trades, in St Mary's Island, Chatham just after 11pm on Friday.

It's believed the fire in Maritime Way was caused by an electrical fault in a tumble dryer.

Despite plans for a temporary closure, after assessing the damage, bosses have made the difficult decision to close all aspects of the business while repairs are made.

A post on Facebook by the Ship and Trades confirmed this adding: "All of our team, contractors and everyone at the fantastic Shepherd Neame brewery will be working so hard behind the scenes to ensure that this is kept to a minimal time frame and updates will be posted here.

"We have attempted to make contact with all bookings over the next few days both in hotel and restaurant to inform you of the situation and will continue to do so throughout the period of closure.

"I would like to thank you all for your messages of support both on social media and in person and thank the wonderful team here who have gone above and beyond in ensuring customer safety and communication.

"Hope all have a good week and we will be back stronger."

Four fire engines attended and while nobody was seriously injured, crews say a man was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Customers who were staying in the hotel the night of the fire were transferred to another local hotel.

The room which caught alight is thought to be directly above the bakery in the Co-op next door.

The convenience store also closed yesterday after loosing 90% of its fresh stock after the fire caused a power outage.

The building also sustained water damage but has been able to reopen today with limited filled and frozen stock.
