Former Chatham clubbing hotspot Krystals Nightclub and Vanity Bar to become flats

The site of two former town centre night spots will be redeveloped into flats.

Developers want to build apartments on a derelict plot in New Road, Chatham, which once hosted Krystals Nightclub and Vanity Bar, which closed in 2013.

Kings Hill-based Provectus Holdings Ltd initially put forward plans to build 72 apartments across two blocks, before reducing this to 50. A quarter of the homes will be affordable.

The proposals include underground parking for 38 cars, which would be accessed from an adjoining road called The Paddock. There would also be electric vehicle charging points.

Medway Council returned its approval last Wednesday (March 8).

The site was once known as Manor Club and became one of Medway's most popular nightspots before it was shut with "considerable reluctance" following a court hearing.

As Krystals the venue hit problems when Medway Council refused to allow it to be changed from a members-only club to a nightclub and extend its opening hours amid fears over its "adult entertainment" offer.

But the club owner later won his battle on appeal and turned it into a popular venue before stepping away in 2013 due to ill health.

Its approval is subject to the developers paying contributions which include over £136,000 towards open spaces, and £35,500 towards primary health care.
