After 72 X-rays it was discovered that her stomach had grown up the left side of her body and what doctors had thought was her stomach was actually her liver.

They also found that Katie had dextrocardia, a condition, whereby the heart is positioned towards the right side of her body, which can cause it to be very weak.

Her nomination form stated: “Katie’s condition affects her every day – she can only eat very little during the day and at night switches over to what she calls her ‘Mickey’ button to feed her overnight.

“There is no name for Katie’s condition. She is rare and we think you all agreed Katie is a heroic and extraordinary young person who remains upbeat and inspiring to all.”
