Glebe manager Gary Alexander enjoyed playing for Steve Evans at Crawley

Prolific striker Gary Alexander has spoken highly of Gillingham boss Steve Evans on this week’s KM Football Podcast.

Alexander, who now manages Southern Counties East side Glebe, enjoyed a fine playing career in the professional game, clocking up over 500 league appearances and four trips to Wembley, with spells at the likes of Leyton Orient and Millwall.

He worked under then-Crawley boss Evans in 2012, moving there from Brentford. It was a manager he knew from before but he was glad to get to know the man properly.

Alexander said: “I had played against him for many a year and I remember having a row with him when I was at Leyton Orient, when we played Boston. We had a massive argument.

“When I signed he said ‘I have never forgotten the day you called me whatever it was you called me’. I just said ‘that’s football!’

“We got on really well and he is a cracking fella. He doesn’t come across like that, a lot of people who don’t know him might say he’s a complete you know what, but Steve is a top, top man.”

More from the Gills;

Evans admitted to raising his voice at the break last Saturday with the Gills, a tactic that paid off. Alexander has been there before too.

“He is a great motivator,” said the 40-year-old. “He can get in your face and liven you up if you are not playing well. I have seen him get very close to people’s faces.

“He is a winner, he gets results and his record speaks for itself so no matter what you think of him, no matter what you think of his style of play, or as a person, he wins promotions and that is why he gets good jobs.”
