James Rogers has told how Lydd’s goalscorers in their 5-2 win over Welling Town were almost left out.

Joint-bosses Rogers and Tom Wynter were ready to rest Kenny Pogue and Sammy Adams for Saturday’s Southern Counties East home game.

But they had a change of heart and it was just as well, with Pogue completing a hat-trick and Adams scoring the other two goals in a big home win.

“The funny thing was, we were looking at the game and with Snodland away coming up on Wednesday, we were thinking about resting Kenny and Sammy,” said Rogers.

“In the end, we just felt we’d go with the team who’ve been doing well for us and winning games and they popped up with the goals.

“We put the strongest team out we could and got the result.”

Pogue helped out in central defence last season but Rogers was determined to use him in his natural position up top after taking charge over the summer.

“Me and Wynts both played against him back in the day,” said Rogers.

“He’s a handful up there and if you play to his strengths and get the ball into him, he’ll hold it up and bully centre-halves. He’s a threat.

“He could have had five or six goals on Saturday but he scored three good goals.”

Lydd lost their first two games following promotion to the Premier Division but have found their feet since.

They thrashed title favourites Faversham 4-1 in their next league match and were too strong for Welling. They were, however, edged 2-1 by Snodland on Wednesday night.

Rogers said: “We had a bad start but we’ve changed things around a little bit.

“Me and Wynts hadn’t played in this league before, so we didn’t really know what it was about.

“We were probably over-playing but now we’re playing to our strengths, getting the ball forward earlier and building from there.

“If we’d scored 10 on Saturday, they couldn’t have argued. We let in two sloppy goals, which I wasn’t happy about, but we played well.”

Lydd are set to make changes when they visit Meridian VP in the Kent Senior Trophy first round this Saturday.
