Flood alerts issued for Kent coastline including Dover, Deal, Folkestone, Sandwich and Isle of Sheppey

Flood alerts have been issued for swathes of the Kent coastline.

Flooding is expected across the south-east and north-west shoreline overnight, predominantly between 12.45am and 4.45am, due to high tides.

Alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency for the stretch between St Margaret's at Cliffe to Sandgate, Ramsgate to Kingsdown, Isle of Sheppey and Kemsley to Seasalter, Dartford to Allhallows, Whitstable to Margate, Tidal Medway, Medway estuary and Isle of Grain.

Towns expected to be impacted include Herne Bay, Dover, Deal, Folkestone, Sandwich, Northfleet and Gravesend

Residents are advised to be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads, as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

Tides will be at their highest between 12.30am and 2.30am tomorrow but conditions may apply two to four hours on either side of the high tide.

Meanwhile in Seasalter, near Canterbury, floodgates are set to be closed due to the high tides.

An alert was in place this afternoon for Sittingbourne, Sheerness, Faversham and Kemsley.

The EA say its’ “incident response staff are actively monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond if required”.
