McCarran grabs lead after wind abates

THE wind that upset so many golfers' play on day one of the Open eased somewhat in the morning, making conditions less difficult.

American Scott McCarran grabbed a share of the lead by scoring birdies on five out of seven holes to go three under after nine holes. He shares the lead with little-known first day leader Henning Otto.

Defending champion Ernie Els, seven over par after the first day, is battling to avoid the humiliation of missing the cut.

Lee Westwood, the top Briton after Colin Montgomerie retired with a hand injury yesterday, has slipped to four over par.
