The Open 2020: Last chance for Saturday tickets as Royal St George’s in Sandwich announce record sales

Record breaking sales for next year's Open golf championship in Sandwich mean only a limited number of weekend tickets remain.

The international sporting event has been the fasting selling to date, with weekly and weekend bundles already sold out.

All tickets for the final day of action, Championship Sunday, have also been snapped up.

Organisers, The R&A, have said that only limited availability is left for Saturday tickets and recommend people wanting to get in on the action to act swiftly.

The maximum number of tickets one person can buy is four.

It will be the 15th time that the championship has been hosted in Sandwich when it returns from Sunday, July 12 to Sunday, July 19, 2020.

The last time was in 2011 when Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke sealed his maiden major title, fulfilling a childhood ambition to triumph on his 20th appearance.

It will be another man from the island of Ireland who will defend the title of champion in Sandwich after Shane Lowry clinched his first Claret Jug at The 148th Open at Royal Portrush, this year.

Sandwich is making preparations to host the hundreds of thousands of visitors who will be travelling to the area.

A multi-million pound project to extend Sandwich Railway Station's platform with officially start in November.

Network Rail will be extending both platforms at the Dover end of the station by 80 metres, so they can fully accommodate 12-carriage trains.

This means trains will no longer straddle the level crossing in Dover Road and cause disruption to local traffic.

Other permanent improvements will include a new stepped footbridge which will link the extended platforms, along with a new walkway from the extended platform 1, to the start of the field linking Sandwich Station to Royal St George’s Golf Club.

The investment is thought to mean that The Open will return to Sandwich at least three more times in the future.

Local residents with questions about this work and other changes related to the tournament will be able to attend drop-in sessions at Sandwich Guildhall in January and April 2020.
