Sandwich Town Council rejects application for 10 flats in Dover Road

Plans for 10 flats in Dover Road, Sandwich, have come under fire over fears of over-development.

A planning application for land near Delfbridge Manor would see three one bedroom flats, five two bedroom flats and two bedroom flats in two blocks.

The proposal came before Sandwich Town Council on Monday, which recommended it for refusal.

Cllr Paul Carter said Dover Road would be over-developed if the scheme was given the go-ahead.

Cllr Joe Trussler said: “I do not like this scheme, it doesn’t fit in with the street scene. It’s like a tin shed.

“There is a highways issue, there are already 10 flats there. The fact is we’re going to get traffic from the supermarket and doctors surgery.

“It’s going to create a hell of a problem there coming in and out of that busy Dover Road near the junction.”

A Waitrose supermarket, doctors surgery and pharmacy has already been approved for Dover Road.

Cllr David Wood said councillors should not make judgements on plans based on what they don’t like.

He said: “The reality is people need places to live and we need affordable housing for local people in Sandwich.”

Cllr Carter disputed this, he said the flats would not be affordable housing.

He said: “These are not starter homes for local people working in local businesses.”
