A bonfire at Beers Yard in Moat Sole, Sandwich was finally extinguished yesterday evening after firefighters tackled the blaze for two days.

Kent Fire and Rescue first attended the scene, near to the Co-Op, on Friday at 3.51pm to tackle a large bonfire.

Crews used a main jet, hose reel and a light portable pump to draw water from a nearby open source.

The fire is believed to have been started maliciously.

During Friday and Saturday nearby residents posted on Facebook to say the fire was still smoking and they could smell the fumes from their homes.

Crews from Eastry and Sandwich returned to the site twice more over the evening and into Saturday, when a crew from Ramsgate fire station managed to extinguish it completely by 5.25pm.
