A worker who fell from the top of scaffolding at the Port of Dover has issued a thank you to those who saved his life.

Steven Cutler, 27, of High Street, Sheerness, was carrying out maintenance work at the Dover Cargo Terminal on Friday morning when he fell.

The air ambulance arrived at the scene and flew him to King’s College Hospital in London.

He said: “I was lucky to survive the fall thanks to the helicopter taking me to King’s in time and the staff on the intensive care ward and now Kinnier Wilson ward nurses.

“I am so grateful to everyone who helped me.”

Mr Cutler suffered severe head injuries which resulted in a blood clot meaning he had to have immediate brain surgery to remove it.

He also shattered his ankle bone and broke his shoulder.

He runs The Old House at Home in Sheerness with his partner, Jade Rother, 23.

He said: “My poor partner, Jade, bless her heart, is at the hospital every day which is hard as we own a pub in Sheerness High Street.”

Mr Cutler said when he is back on his feet he wants to take part in a charity car rally to raise money for the air ambulance and the hospital team.

He said: “I am so thankful to the air ambulance team for saving me, especially as I was scared to go in the helicopter.”

Mr Cutler, who works for a contractor which was carrying out maintenance at the port said his employer had also been very supportive.

He said: “It’s no one’s fault. It was just a complete accident and everyone was perfect in helping me so much.”

He is now recovering at King’s College Hospital.

A Port of Dover spokesman said: “A thorough investigation is under way and our immediate thoughts are with the contractor who, we are delighted to hear, is making good progress.”
