A grandad is pleading with people not to spoil the beaches for everyone else after he spent his own time clearing up broken glass and cans.

Ken West and his wife June decided to take advantage of the nice weather on Sunday afternoon and took two of their six grandchildren and their son and daughter-in-law out for a walk along The Leas in Minster.

Ken was approached by a woman who warned them about the amount of broken glass, and he was amazed to see how much was there.

The family returned home and then Mr and Mrs West, of Sexburgha Drive, Minster, picked up a shovel and bucket and went back to the beach, where they spent an hour clearing the rubbish.

They were able to fill up a bucket with glass, beer cans and broken bottles.

Mr West said the worst of the glass was near the lifeguard hut, where they also found cans which had been filled up with stones, which he suspected had been thrown around.

The 67-year-old said: "I picked up everything I could see - just imagine if one of your kids stands on that.

"They are absolute mindless morons, whoever did it.

"I think they must come from off the Island because if you are local you wouldn't do it - I would hope not, anyway."

Mr West said he returned to the beach on Monday to check he had not missed any rubbish and met a German family holidaying here.

He added: "They said how nice the place is and what a lovely area it is - apart from the glass.

"If the message gets out there's loads of glass on the beach, people won't come.

"It's a family beach and we are all very proud of its clean beach award.

"These people have to be more considerate to the rest of us and not spoil it for everyone else."
