Sittingbourne manager Ryan Maxwell pays tribute to award winners Matt Warren and Donvieve Jones

Boss Ryan Maxwell paid tribute to Sittingbourne’s award winners following the club’s presentation evening.

Midfielder Matt Warren was named both manager’s player and players’ player-of-the-year, while defender Donvieve Jones picked up the supporters’ award and the golden boot after scoring 12 goals.

The evening went ahead as planned at Woodstock on Saturday despite the postponement of the final home game of the season against Burgess Hill due to a waterlogged pitch.

Bourne won the rearranged fixture 4-0 last night thanks to goals from Correy Davidson, Chaynie Burgin, Dwade James and Mitchell May, extending their unbeaten run to 12 games.

They end the Isthmian South East campaign at Lancing on Saturday (3pm), looking for a top-10 finish.

Warren was made captain by former boss Nick Davis before Christmas but lost the armband after Maxwell came in and signed Joe Ellul from Maidstone.

However, he’s still been a major influence in Bourne’s flying finish to the season and richly deserves his double award.

“He’s been our most consistent player and our most consistent trainer,” said Maxwell.

“He wins the ball, he keeps the ball, he moves the ball, he covers every blade of grass - he’s effective in everything he does.

“Players like that are key in any team. They don’t always get the credit they deserve but Matt has been head and shoulders out most consistent player.

“It raised a few eyebrows when I took the captaincy off him.

“I didn’t want to take it off him, I just wanted him to play his own game and be the best he could be because that in itself would inspire those around him anyway.

“I made Joe captain because he’s a well-known player in Kent and I felt when it came to speaking to referees, it might be a bit better coming from Joe.

“When you’re trying to change things around, as we were, you have to shake things up a bit to get a reaction.

"If you look at it, Matt’s my player-of-the-year and we’ve gone 12 games unbeaten, so it’s worked out pretty well.

“Part of the job is making these decisions.”

Jones’ impressive goal return, despite playing at the back, earned the supporters’ vote.

He started the season at right-back under Davis and now operates as wing-back.

“It’s fantastic to reach double figures from a defensive role, albeit wing-back later in the season,” said Maxwell.

“He needs to tighten up on a couple of things to get to the levels I think he can but he has the potential to be a very good player.

“He’s always asking what he can do better, he sends me messages asking how he can improve and I’m only too happy to help him with that. The best is yet to come.

“It’s not his main role in the team, to score goals, but it gets people talking about you.

“Some people are lazy and don’t watch players before making comments or even trying to sign players but to get double figures from right-back and right-wing-back is a great tally.

"There can’t be many in our league who can match that.

“I think he can play considerably higher up the pyramid.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if someone took a punt on him when he’s ready to go full-time, whether’s that in the National League or National South.

“He’s got the tools. He needs to work on a couple of those tools, and me and him know what they are.

“Once he’s tightened up on those, put it this way, there are a lot worse players than Donvieve playing much higher up than he is.”
